Liiven $150 Check Cedar Mountain Community Wins WNC Roadside Contest m _ Cedar Mountain communi ty of Transylvania County has been named top winner < of the Roadisde Impmxemeut Contest of the Western North Carolina Community De velopment Program for 1971. Newfound of Buncombe County was named second prize winner and Union Mills, Rutherford County placed third. Honorable men tion placings wept to White Oak Creek, Yancey County; Kirkland’s Creek, Swain County; Painttown, Cherokee Indian Reservation and Glen vine, Jackson County. Announcement of the rural beautification winners was made at a luncheon meeting of the Area Steering Committee for the WNC Community Develop ment Program at Bailey’s Cafe teria, Westgate Shopping Cen ter, Asheville. Awards totaling $400 were presented by Karle Lehman, president of the spon soring Asheville Agricultural Development Council and manager of K-mart. Sponsor of the $150 first prize was ADOA Corporation of Blltmore. The second prize of $100 was provided by Co ca - Cola Bottling Company of Asheville and the $50 third prize by Ivey’s of Asheville. Four honorable mention awards of $25 each were giv en by Gerber Products Com pany and Asheville Federal Savings & Loan Association. The roadside improvement contest, which is open to all organized community clubs in Western North Carolina has two purposes. One is to stmu late oragnized efforts by tbe community groups in dean-up and beautification programs, and the other is to provide —Turn to Page Four To File Brief* Debates By Olin And Union Completed, NLRB Hearing ueoate Detore tne National Labor Relations Board as to defining the employees eli gible to vote was completed Tuesday in Transylvania County Courthouse, conclud ing the NLRB hearing initi ated in Asheville September 21 among Olin Corporation and Union representatives. Next probable steps in the preceedings will be the filing of briefs which each party has the opportunity to d<* after which the NLRB Regional Di rector is expected to issue his decision. Date of the election 'will be set by the Regional Di rector. It was agreed at Tuesday’s hearing that all 18 hourly workers wno perform cleri cal work from time to time would be allowed to vote. At the initial hearing the Union had objected to letting one such worker be included in the voting unit. Thus, as Olin insisted at the outset, all 59 relief foremen and all 18 hourly employees who do some clerical work will be eligible to vote. Olin testified Tuesday as to the status of all employees on Long Term Disability and Disa bility Retirement, and outlined Company policy in this regard. Olin has taken the position that all employees who are on LTD and who remain on the payroll under applicable policies should be allowed to vote. The Kiwanians will start serv ing at 5:00 o’clock, and they hope to get everybody served before the football game at 8:00 p.m. The menu will consist of pan cakes, sausage, coffee or kool ade. Proceeds from the supper will help sponsor the club’s Key club, the Scholarship fund and the Boy Scout troop. Tickets are $1.00 each, and the Kiwanians say “bring the entire family for a delicious meal”. BLT To Hold Tryouts For Comedy, "Luv" The Brevard Little Theatre will hold tryouts for “Luv”, the first play of the season. Try outs will be Monday, Oct. 4th, and Wednesday, Oct. 6th, at 7:30 p. m. in the Little Theatre building located directly be hind The Transylvania Times. “Luv”, one of Broadway’s brighest comedy hits, was writ ten by Murray Schisgal. Attorney General Speaks At Well Attended Luncheon Here This Weekend Brevard High School Band To Enter Bristol Festival Friday, October 1st, will see the departure of the Bre vard high school band for the 21st Annual Southeast ern Band Festival to be held on Saturday, October 2nd, in Bristol Municipal Stadium, Bristol, Va.-Tenn. For the third time, the band crosses the mountains to par ticipate in a marching band festival which has grown from a local Tennessee event begin ning with 23 bands in 1951 to over 70 bands this year. The bands come representing eight states — Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Caro lina, Georgia, Kentucky, West Virginia and Florida. Approximately 7,000 band members will participate in the Festival activities begin ning with a parade through downtown Bristol, followed by marching competition in the afternoon and all eve ning. Judging of each band is against a standard and not in competition with other bands. Each band is allowed to per form a maximum of seven min utes and a minimum of five minutes. Bands scoring 90 to 100 will be graded Division I: BO to 89.0 will be graded Di vision II and 70 to 79.9 will —Turn to Page Four Thursday, Friday College Trustees To Hold Fall Meeting The Board of Trustees of Brevard College will hold their annual Fall meeting this week end on the Campus here. Chairman Allen H. Sims will preside over the various sessions, and Dr. Robert A. Davis, the president, says a good attendance in antici pated. There will be a dinner for the Trustees and their wives Thursday evening at 7:00 o’clock in the Myers dining hall, to be follow ed by music and entertainment. DAVIS President of College Attorney General Robert Morgan said here last Wed nesday that he just might be a candidate for Governor in the Democratic Primary next May. He made the statement at a luncheon in Berry’s Lambeau room, which was attended by some 75 Democratic leaders and others. Jack Bryant, who is a mem ber of the North Carolina Conservation and Develop ment commission, welcomed those attending and intro duced Mr. Morgan. In his introduction. Mr. Bryant said: “In my opinion, this man will be our next Governor”. The Attorney General told of the work of his office and then he discussed major prob —Turn to Page Four Davis Will Be Speaker, Goal Set At $55,266 Dr. Robert Davis, President of Brevard College, will be the principal speaker at the United Fund Kickoff Break fast to be held at Berry’s res taurant on Tuesday morning, October 5, at 7:30. Earl Johnson, President of the United Fund, has an nounced the campaign goal of §55,266.63. He urges all agency representatives and all campaign workers to at tend the breakfast. Delegates from 13 of the 18 county precincts were present and voted on the nominations of officers to the County Ex ecutive Committee and other positions. Nominations were made for Chairman with William White receiving 30 votes to Jack Wyatt’s 21 votes.
